A
museum is an abode of various artefacts collected to reflect and in turn
educate the present generations about the cultural, historical, and artistic
works of the bygone era. Lockhart Tea Museum is one such place which excites
its visitors by providing a historical voyage through the development of one of
the first plantations in Munnar from 1879. This living Museum and factory gives
a bucketful of knowledge about orthodox tea processing and the operations that
go into the making of black tea, green tea, and white tea in traditional ways.
Lockhart Tea Museum displays various equipment’s
used in the plantation in the past and present like Hand Shears, Mechanical Harvesting
Machines, Drake and Fletcher Sprayer to name a few.
The Tea
Museum makes the visitors understand the growth of plantations from 1819. The
Museum includes old writings, 100 years old photographs of the British planters
during their hunting, Bullock carts, Allwyn Prestocold refrigerator, Funerary
Urn etc which informs the visitors about the ancient world. Old photographs on
the walls show a glimpse of the history of Munnar.
The
Lockhart tea factory is famous for its Orthodox Tea produced in the traditional
way. The factory houses the museum was built in 1936 and includes a tea sales
outlet and tea-tasting sections. The tourists are given a guided briefing about
the origins of tea for consumption, its history & health Benefits to the
visitors.

Know Before Your Visit
- Our factory follows strict FDA requirements and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) to ensure the safety of our employees and tourists. Please keep in mind these restrictions during your visit at Lockhart Factory
- Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.
- Photography is prohibited in the factory.
- Foot cover are required in the factory.
- Food, drinks, gum and glass containers are not allowed in the factory.
- Service animals are not allowed in the factory.
- Restrooms are not available during the factory portion of the tour.
- Smoking not allowed.
- Courtesy wheelchairs are available for guests but they are limited in quantity and are available on a first come, first served basis. Tour Guides will not be available to push wheelchairs in the factory.
- Tour participants must allow the tour guide to lead at all times.
- Prohibited items policy includes items that we determine may be harmful or disruptive to our guests or employees. Examples of prohibited items include but are not limited to: alcoholic beverages or any illegal substance under Indian law, weapons of any kind or objects that appear to be weapons (including toy guns such as squirt guns, nerf guns, etc.) Drones, remote control devices, skateboards, scooters, inline skates and shoes with built-in wheels.
- Reservations are required for all group tours. Advanced reservations are required for groups of 8 or more.
- Outside food is not permitted in our tour center or café. You may utilize our outside tables or purchase food from the café. Contact our Café for group reservations at +91 4865 264036.
